At 2 years old, kids still surprise us with how much they’re growing every day. Toddlers at this age are learning new ways to use their bodies and minds. They can kick and throw a ball, run, climb, scribble, and build with blocks (and topple what you build). Two-year-olds are honing their communication and cooperation skills and starting to imitate you, engage in pretend play, and understand the stories you read to them. The best gifts for 2-year-olds are ones that help foster these burgeoning skills through imaginative, active play.
“Using play to help foster things like communication and social skills is teaching these things in the child’s native language,” says Neal Petersen, LPCC, a registered play therapist (RPT) and clinical operations director for Greater Minnesota at Ellie Mental Health. “For example, model sharing between two toys as you play with your child. That will help them retain the information and make those neuropathways in the brain nice and strong.”
Play has a profound impact on child development, especially at the pivotal age of 2, according to Katie McCann, a mom of two, breastfeeding counselor, and paramedic. “Play is a child’s primary job, and it’s through this medium that they understand the world, develop essential skills, and grow both mentally and physically,” says McCann. “Choosing the right toys and understanding the developmental milestones can significantly enhance this journey.”
From outdoor and pretend play to books, games, and blocks, we’ve rounded up the best toys we’re sure 2-year-olds will love. To create this list, we considered each toy’s age recommendations, features, quality, materials, durability, value, and engagement potential. We also reviewed guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on milestones for 2-year-olds and toy safety tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). We’re sure our list has something for everyone.

It does take some assembly so if you’re giving it, offering to help the parents set it up would likely be appreciated. Plus then you can play too once it’s all set.

Our Review Process and Experts
To create this list of the best toys for 2-year-olds, we researched shopping trends, reviewed CDC information regarding 2-year-olds’ development, and read up on the AAP’s toy safety recommendations. We assessed each product based on its features, quality, materials, value, safety, age-appropriateness, and engagement potential. To find out more about what to look for in toys for 2-year-olds and toy safety, we also interviewed some experts:
- Neal Petersen, LPCC, a registered play therapist (RPT) and clinical operations director for Greater Minnesota at Ellie Mental Health.
- Katie McCann, a mom of two, breastfeeding counselor, and paramedic.
Factors to Consider When Buying Gifts for 2-Year-Olds
- Developmental Milestones: Children begin to reach several important milestones around age 2. Children are working on their fine motor skills, language development, and imaginative play abilities, so look for gifts that help them practice those skills. You can find out more about your child’s developmental stage and what kind of toys they’ll like by playing with them. “It’s important for parents to consider their child’s psychological or emotional maturity, and know their child’s play style,” says Petersen. “To know what is age-appropriate, you first need to play with your child!”
- Safety: When choosing a gift for a 2-year-old, start with the item’s age recommendations. Toys targeted at older children may have small parts that can detach and pose a choking hazard, especially if the child still regularly puts things in their mouth. You should also consider the materials used in the product. Look for options that are BPA-free and made from nontoxic materials in case the toddler chews, bites, or sucks on the item. All painted toys should be labeled as not containing lead. This is especially important when purchasing toys made outside the U.S. and certain plastic toys, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
- The Child’s Interests: Selecting a gift for a 2-year-old can be tricky if you don’t get to spend a lot of time with them. Ideally, you’d want to consider the child’s interests, something you could learn by observing how they play. If that’s not possible, start by asking their parents if there is anything they’d like. Ask questions about the child’s favorite colors, activities, animals, and characters.
- Noise, Batteries, etc.: While choosing gifts for 2-year-olds, you’ll want to also consider their caregivers. Toys that are overly noisy, require extensive assembly, have tons of small parts, or require lots of batteries can all be frustrating. When in doubt, ask. Many caregivers keep a wishlist of items they think their child will like, and most have preferences about which toy annoyances they find least annoying.
Your Questions, Answered
How much should you spend on a gift for a 2-year-old?
How much you spend on a gift depends on your budget and your relationship with the child. In general, you can expect to spend anywhere between $20 and $50 for a thoughtful, durable toy or gift. However, there are plenty of great options that fall below this price range, like board books, which often retail for less than $5, as well as gifts that fall above that range. When deciding how much to spend, consider their caregivers’ preferences. Some parents may ask for no gifts or a donation to a child’s college fund instead of gifts.
What do 2-year-olds like to play?
While every 2-year-old is different, there are some general things almost every 2-year-old likes to do. “You can’t go wrong with building blocks,” says Petersen. “There is so much that can be done with them (building, counting, pairing), and there is very little risk with them. If your child tends to throw things, choose blocks that are maybe made of foam as opposed to wood.”
Assorted figurines like animals, dinosaurs, and people are also great for imagination and modeling conversation. Finally, don’t underestimate the awesomeness of paper and crayons. It’s a great tool for active adult-child engagement. “Studies show that five minutes of child-directed play a day can have huge upsides in the parent-child relationship, so get some toys, get on the floor, and play with your kids,” Petersen says.
